This is a cover version of my all time favorite Ramones track, from my all-time favorite Ramones album, "Animal Boy." Jean Beauvoir's synth-heavy, quintessentially 80's production on that record is pure glossy perfection to my ears, and I love every song on it, but nothing approaches the love I have for Something to Believe In. Written by Dee Dee Ramone and Jean Beauvoir, the song is the perfect mix of Dee Dee's melancholy-yet-hopeful lyrics, what I consider the greatest Joey Ramone vocal performance, Ritchie's solid drumming, and the sugary frosting of Beauvoir's synthesizers laid on top of it all. (Joey's earnest delivery and vocal crack when he delivers the line "I wish I was someone else..." is so filled with yearning and sincerity that it gives me chills every time I hear it.) When I love an album, I have a synesthetic reaction that results in my being unable to hear the music without seeing the colors I associate with it, usually the color scheme of the album art. For instance, I can't listen to any song off of the Downward Spiral by Nine Inch Nails without seeing the beige/black/scab-red earth tones of Russel Mills' iconic artwork. I can't listen to Telekon by Gary Numan without picturing the black and red of the album's cover. And above all, I can't listen to Animal Boy without seeing the deep cyan of the album's cover art color scheme. My goal was to cover Something to Believe In and hopefully synesthetically see that blue when listening to my own version. And yeah, of course, will never be Joey Ramone's.
